Exponential Form of a Complex Number
Express the complex number Z = 10 ∠60° in exponential and rectangular forms. Sketch the number in the complex plane.
Conversion from polar to exponential forms is based on Equation A.13. Thus, we have
A ∠θ = A × (1 ∠θ ) = Ae^{jθ} (A.13)
Z = 10∠60° = 10e^{j60°}
The rectangular form can be found by using Equation A.8:
e^{jθ} = \cos(θ) + j \sin(θ) (A.8)
Z = 10 × (e^{j60°})
= 10 × [\cos(60°) + j \sin(60°)]
= 5 + j8.66
The graphical representation of Z is shown in Figure A.6.
