Barium sulfate (BaSO_4) is a highly insoluble salt. If we conduct this reaction using the conductivity apparatus described in Section 15.5, the light glows brightly at first but goes out when the reaction is complete because almost no ions are left in solution. The BaSO_4 precipitates out of solution, and water is a nonconductor of electricity.
