If the rotor does manage to rotate at the same speed as that of the stator rotating field then there would be no relative motion between those two and consequently there would be no motoring action. In this case, the motor speed would reduce to zero, but as soon as the motor speed began to decline immediately a relative motion would be created again and the motor would start. In practice, however, this does not happen owing to the large inertia of the motor. As a result: in the steady state, the rotor always rotates at a speed less than the synchronous speed.
