Question 4.6: NAMING ACIDS Name the following acids: (a) HBrO(aq)  (b) H2S...

NAMING ACIDS

Name the following acids:

(a) HBrO(aq)                           (b) H_{2}S(aq)

STRATEGY
To name an acid, look at the formula and decide whether the compound is an oxoacid.
If so, the name must reflect the number of oxygen atoms, according to Table 4.4. If the compound is not an oxoacid, it is named using the prefix hydro- and the suffix -ic acid.

TABLE 4.4 Common Oxoacids and Their Anions

Oxoacid                                                     Oxoanion
HNO_{2}               Nitrous acid                        NO_{2}^{-}                  Nitrite ion
HNO_{3}               Nitric acid                            NO_{3}^{-}                  Nitrate ion
H_{3}PO_{4}             Phosphoric acid                  PO_{4}^{3-}                  Phosphate ion
H_{2}SO_{3}            Sulfurous acid                    SO_{3}^{2-}                     Sulfite ion
H_{2}SO_{4}             Sulfuric acid                        SO_{4}^{2-}                     Sulfate ion
HClO                Hypochlorous acid            CIO^{-}                    Hypochlorite ion
HCIO_{2}            Chlorous acid                      CIO_{2}^{-}                    Chlorite ion
HCIO_{3}             Chloric acid                          CIO_{3}^{-}                     Chlorate ion
HCIO_{4}             Perchloric acid                    CIO_{4}^{-}                  Perchlorate ion

(a) This compound is an oxoacid that yields hypobromite ion (BrO^{-}) when dissolved in water. Its name is hypobromous acid.
(b) This compound is not an oxoacid but yields sulfide ion when dissolved in water. As a pure gas, H_{2}S is named hydrogen sulfide. In water solution, it is called hydrosulfuric acid.
