The figure is a schematic drawing of a countershaft that supports two V-belt pulleys. The countershaft runs at 1200 rev/min and the bearings are to have a life of 60 kh at a combined reliability of 0.999. The belt tension on the loose side of pulley A is 15 percent of the tension on the tight side. Select deep-groove bearings from Table 11–2 for use at O and E, each to have a 25-mm bore, using an application factor of unity.

The reliability of the individual bearings is R={\sqrt{0.999}}=0.9995
From statics,
\begin{array}{l l}{{R_{O}^{y}=-163.4\,{\mathrm{N}},}}&{{R_{O}^{{z}}=107\,{\mathrm{N}},}}\\ {{R_{E}^{y}=-89.2\,{\mathrm{N}},}}&{{R_{E}^{z}=-174.4\,{\mathrm{N}},}}\end{array}\begin{array}{l}{{R_{O}=195\,{\mathrm{N}}}}\\ {{R_{E}=\mathrm{196\,{\mathrm{N}}}}}\end{array}x_{D}=\frac{60\,000(1200)(60)}{10^{6}}=4320
C_{10}=0.196\left\{\frac{4340}{0.02+4.439[\ln(1/0.9995)]^{1/1.483}}\right\}^{1/3}=8.9\,kN
A 02-25 mm deep-groove ball bearing has a basic load rating of 14.0 kN which is ample. An extra-light bearing could also be investigated.
