More advanced components remove the need to choose between devices with combinational outputs by providing a variable output structure that can be made to emulate either form. A widely used example of this type of device is the 22V10 PAL which is shown in Fig. 16.11. Here the output circuit takes the form of a macrocell that can be individually configured for each output. In addition to providing a combinational or registered output, the macrocell allows output to be selectively inverted and provides an output enable function. This device has 10 OR gates with inputs ranging from 8 to 16 .
