Medium-Scale-Integration (MSI) ICs are available with four full-adders in a single package. Table 10.3 lists the most popular adder ICs. Each adder in the table contains four full-adders, and all are functionally equivalent; however their pin layouts differ (refer to data manual for pin layouts). Each of them will add two 4-bit binary words plus one incoming carry. The binary sum appears on the sum outputs \left(\Sigma_{1}\right. to \left.\Sigma_{4}\right) and the outgoing carry.

Figure 10.13 shows the functional diagram and the logic diagram for the 7483. In the figure the least significant binary inputs \left(2^{\circ}\right) come into the A_{1} B_{1} terminals, and the most significant \left(2^{3}\right) come into the A_{4} B_{4} terminals.

Device Family Description
7483 TTL 4-Bit binary full-adder, fast carry
74HC283 CMOS 4-Bit binary full-adder, fast carry
4008 CMOS 4-Bit binary full-adder, fast carry
