For the vessel in Example 3.4, suppose the same movement of the jockey weight had produced angles of tilt of 10° and 40°. What would you conclude about the stability of the vessel under these circumstances?
GM =\left(300 \times 10^3 / 50 \times 10^6\right) \times(8 \times 57.3) / 10=0.28 m. Reduced stability, small GM, just OK?
GM =\left(300 \times 10^3 / 50 \times 10^6\right) \times(8 \times 57.3) / 40=0.07 m. Much too small to be acceptable. Note that by this method of calculation GM cannot become negative (indicating instability), it can only approach zero.
