A weight of 200 N drops axially on a close coiled helical spring. The spring has 15 coils of mean diameter 200 mm. The spring wire has diameter 25 mm. Determine the height of drop if the instantaneous compression is 120 mm and the modulus of rigidity is 80 GPa.

Equivalent static load P_e for 120 mm deflection is given by equation (16.3) as follows:

P_e=\frac{Gd^4\delta }{64R^3n} =\frac{80000\times25^4\times120}{64\times100^3\times15} =3906.25  N

Equating work done by falling load and the strain energy stored,

P(h+\delta )=\frac{1}{2}P_e\delta

or,        200(h+120)=\frac{1}{2}\times3906.25\times120

or,                  h=1052 mm
