## Q. 5.10

An internal stainless steel rod is welded to the inside of a carbon steel vessel as shown in Fig. 5.20. If the coefficient of thermal expansion is 9.5 × 10$^{-6}$ in./in.°F for the rod and 6.7 × 10$^{-6}$ in./in .°F for the vessel, what is the stress in weld A due to a temperature increase of 400°F ? Use E = 28 × 10$^6$ psi.

## Verified Solution

Weld A is essentially subjected to a uniaxial stress. Hence,

\begin{aligned}\max \sigma &=E \Delta \alpha \Delta T \\&=\left(28 \times 10^{6}\right)(9.5-6.7)\left(10^{-6}\right)(400) \\&=31,400 psi\end{aligned}
