Our team is designing a small reinforced concrete office. The senior engineer has decided that the lateral load-resisting system will be structural walls and that we will use partial-depth collectors if needed.
The team has determined the requirements for the partial-depth collectors due to wind in the north-south direction. Our job is to determine the chord forces and locations to carry the in plane moment due to wind from the north.
The lateral elements in the north-south direction are identical, so they have the same rigidity. A more experienced member of the team points out that because of the uniform loading and the symmetrical rigidity, the load carried by each of the lateral elements is the same whether we treat the diaphragm as flexible or rigid.
Our explanations are based on the best information we have, but they may not always be right or fit every situation.
