The carbon requirement for a canister system can be estimated using

C_{req} = M_{HAP}  θ_{ad}/W_{c}                                                       (11)
C_{req} = ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ lb of carbon

If the HAP inlet loading (M_{HAP}) is not given, it can be determined

M_{HAP} = 6.0 \times 10^{−5} (HAP_{e})(Q_{e})(D_{HAP})                  (4)
M_{HAP} = ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ lb of HAP/h

To determine the required canister number (RCN), the C_{req} is divided by the amount of carbon contained in a single canister and rounded up to the next whole number. Typically, each canister contains 150 lb of carbon.

RCN = C_{req}/(150 lb carbon/canister)
RCN = ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ
