Let the unknown quantities of the 20% slurry and water be X and Y respectively.

Material balance on Ca(OH)2

In               out

X\frac{20}{100}=2000*\frac{5}{100}                 (a)

Balance on water

X\frac{\left (100 – 20 \right )}{100}+Y=2000\frac{\left ( 100-5 \right )}{100}            (b)

From equation (a)X = 500 kg
Substituting into equation(b) gives Y = 1500 kg

Check material balance on total quantity:

X+Y=2000

500+1500=2000,correct
