Question 6.7: A water tank is required to be constructed with a circular f...

A water tank is required to be constructed with a circular foundation having a diameter of 16 m founded at a depth of 2 m below the ground surface. The estimated distributed load on the foundation is 325 kN / m ^{2}. Assuming that the subsoil extends to a great depth and is isotropic and homogeneous, determine the stresses \sigma_{z} at points (i) z = 8 m, r = 0, (ii) z = 8 m, r = 8 m, (iii) z = 16 m, r = 0 and (iv) z=16m, r = 8m, where r is the radial distance from the central axis. Neglect the effect of the depth of the foundation on the stresses. (Use Fig. 6.11)

q=325 kN / m ^{2}, R_{0}=8 m. The results are given in a tabular form as follows:

Point z / R_{0} r / R_{0} l \sigma_{z} kN / m ^{2}
(i) (8,0) 1 0 0.7 227.5
(ii) (8,8) 1 1 0.33 107.25
(iii) (16,0) 2 0 0.3 97.5
(iv) (16, 8) 2 1 0.2 65
