A Zener voltage regulator circuit is to maintain constant voltage at 60 V, over a current range frome 5 to 50 mA. The input supply voltage is 200 V. Determine the value of resistance R to be connected in the circuit, for voltage regulation from load current I_{L} = 0 mA to I_{L} max, the maximum possible value of I_{L}. What is the value of I_{L} max?

Given V_{z} = V_{o} = 60 V and V_{in} = 200 V
(a) To find the value of resistance (R).

R = \frac{V_{in} – V_{o}}{I_{z(min)} + I_{L(max)}}

= \frac{200 – 60}{50 × 10^{– 3}}=\frac{140}{50 × 10^{– 3}}= 2.8 kΩ

(b) To find the value of I_{L(max)}.
If I_{z(max)} = 50 mA, I_{L(min)} = 0 mA
If I_{z(min)} = 5 mA, I_{L(max)} = 45 mA
Therefore, I_{L(max)} = 45 mA
