Accepted Answer

The formulas for undeformed length and thickness, respectively, are

[latex]l=\sqrt{Dd} [/latex] and [latex]t=\sqrt{\frac{4v}{VCr} \sqrt{\frac{d}{D} }. } [/latex]

From Table 9.2

the following values are selected:

[latex]v=0.4[/latex] m/s and V = 25 m/s

Therefore,

[latex]l=\sqrt{(150)(0.03)} =2.12[/latex] mm

and

[latex]t=\sqrt{\frac{(4)(0.4)}{(25)(3)(12)}\sqrt{\frac{0.03}{150} } } =0.005[/latex] mm

Note that because of plastic deformation, the actual length of the chip is shorter and the thickness greater than these values. (See Fig. 9.7.)
