Q. 1.4

The unheated storage facility shown in Fig. 1–15 is located on flat open terrain near Cario, Illinois, where the ground snow load is $15 {lb}/{ft^{2} }$. Determine the design snow load on the roof.

Verified Solution

Since the roof is flat, we will use Eq. 1–5. Here, $C_{e}=0.8$ due to the open area, $C_{t}=1.2$ and $I=0.8$ . Thus,

$p_{f} =0.7C_{e}C_{t}Ip_{g}$

$=0.7 \left(0.8\right)\left(1.2\right)\left(15 {lb}/{ft^{2} }\right) =8.06 {lb}/{ft^{2} }$

Since $p_{g}=15 {lb}/{ft^{2} } \lt 20 {lb}/{ft^{2} }$ ,then also

$p_{f}=Ip_{g}=1.2\left(15 {lb}/{ft^{2} }\right) =18 {lb}/{ft^{2} }$

By comparison, choose

$p_{f}=18 {lb}/{ft^{2} }$
