An AC voltage has a value of 120 V RMS. What is the peak value of voltage?
peak = RMS × 1.414
peak = 120 V× 1.414
peak = 169.68 V
When the RMS values of voltage and current are used, the result is the same amount of power as like values of DC voltage and current. If 100 V RMS is applied to a 100-Ω resistor, the resistor will produce 100 W of heat. AC voltmeters and ammeters indicate the RMS value, not the peak value. Oscilloscopes, however, display the peak-to-peak value of voltage. All values of AC voltage and current used from now on in this text are RMS values unless otherwise stated.
