To determine the power gain, first we need to calculate the input power P_{i} and the output power P_{o} .

From the example, V_{i} = 1.82  V and R_{i} = 1  kΩ . Therefore

P_{i} = \frac{V_{i}^{2}}{R_{i}} = \frac{(1.82)^{2}}{1000} = 3.3  mW

We also know that V_{o} = 15.2  V and R_{L} = 50  Ω . Therefore

P_{0} = \frac{V_{0}^{2}}{R_{L}} = \frac{(15.2)^{2}}{50} = 4.62  W

The power gain is then given by

power gain (A_{p}) = \frac{P_{0}}{P_{i}} = \frac{4.62}{0.0033} = 1400

Note that when calculating the input power we use R_{i} but, when calculating the output power, we use R_{L} (not R_{0} ). This is because we are calculating the power delivered to the load, not the power dissipated in the output resistance.
