Silicon’s Electron Configuration
Find the electron configuration for silicon (Si).
Interpret and Anticipate
According to the periodic table, Si has 14 electrons. We expect its configuration to be longer than the configuration of neon, which has only 10 electrons.
Solve
Fill in a diagram (Fig. 42.30) following these three rules: (1) start with the lowest energy subshell, (2) obey Pauli’s exclusion principle, and (3) obey Hund’s rule.
Write the electron configuration based on this figure.
1 s^2 2 s^2 2 p^6 3 s^2 3 p^2Check and Think
As expected, the electron configuration for silicon is longer than that for neon \left(1 s^2 2 s^2 2 p^6\right).
