Strontium Oxide
Strontium oxide (SrO), also known as strontia, has the NaCl crystal structure. Write the lattice and basis description of strontium oxide.
SrO has an FCC lattice with a basis of O^{2–} (0, 0, 0) and Sr^{2+} (1/2, 0, 0).
Note that SrO has a radius ratio for the ions of 1.12 Å/(1.32 Å) = 0.85. This radius ratio indicates that SrO should have the CsCl crystal structure. This example illustrates that while radius ratios provide a general guideline to indicate a likely structure for a material, the guideline is not strictly followed in nature for every crystal.
