Water flowing in a pipe of 500 mm dia suddenly passes into a pipe of 750 mm dia. Determine the loss of head if the initial velocity was 2 m/s.
Ref. eqn 7.12.1. In this case,
\mathrm{Loss of head} = (u_{1} – u_{2})²/2g (7.12.1)h_{f} = (u_{2} – u_{1})²/2g, u_{1} = 2 \mathrm{m/s}, u_{2} = 2 × (0.5/0.75)² = 0.889 \mathrm{m/s}.
∴\quad h_{f} = (2 – 0.889)²/2 × 9.81 = 0.0629 \mathrm{m}.
