A spline connection with the following specifications is used in an automobile transmission system.
Major diameter of the spline = 45 mm
Height of each spline = 4.25 mm
Length of the spline = 30 mm
Number of splines = 6
Determine the torque capacity of the spline. The allowable stress is 6.2 N/mm².
Major diameter D = 45 mm
Minor diameter d = 45 – 2 × 4.25 = 36.5 mm
A = total area of splines
=n \times\left(\frac{D-d}{2}\right) \times l
=6 \times\left(\frac{45-36.5}{2}\right) \times 30=765 \mathrm{~mm}^2
R_m= mean effective radius
=\frac{D+d}{2}
=\frac{45+36.5}{2}=40.75 \mathrm{~mm}
The torque transmitting capacity of the splines is
T=p A \times R_m
=6.2 \times 765 \times 40.75=1270330.3 \mathrm{~N} \cdot \mathrm{m}
=1270.33 \mathrm{~N} \cdot \mathrm{m}
